The Manfrotto BeFree Color tripod is one of the few tripods that use a horizontal lock instead of a more compact twist tripod. Although the debate about distortion and level is mainly personal preference, I prefer the safety of flipping. That's why I chose BeFree when I bought my travel tripod. The BeFree Color weighs just over 3 pounds and can be folded over 16 inches.

The legs on BeFree can be adjusted to three different angles. In addition to the compact folding, this allows the tripod to reach 13.4 inches and up to 56.7 inches. Like other three-pound travel tripods, BeFree may be a bit susceptible to the wind. That's why I recommend BeFree Color on the original BeFree. Color is a seemingly tiny update to the original - but it adds a weight hook. Clamping my camera case under the tripod can offset the slight instability that the wind can cause. With the counterweight, BeFree Color is very sturdy.

BeFree's mid-range price, compact design, versatile height and flip lock make me the best travel tripod. This does not mean that it must be the best tripod for every photographer.

The capacity is 8.8 pounds, so it is not designed for the largest telephoto lens. A height limit of 56.7 inches will also be a difficult point for tall photographers. But for the price, Manfrotto BeFree Color provides solid quality and portability.
